BMW India rolls out 20,000th car from Chennai unit

Germany-based luxury car maker BMW, has released its 20,000th from its manufacturing facility located at Sriperumbudur near here.

With an initial investment of Rs 110 crore, the company had established the plant in March 2007 having a production capacity of 3000 cars per year. Over the years, the company has raised the capacity of the plant to up to 11,000 units per year. Last year, in November BMW India had rolled out its 10,000th unit.

Company’s Managing Director Mr Juergen Eder, has formally rolled out the 20,000th car from the assembly line.
The plant currently assembles the 3 Series, 5 Series, X1 and X3 in India and imports the 5 Series GT, 3 Series convertible, 5 Series 535i, 6 Series, 7 Series, X5, X6, X6M, M3 and Z4.

The Sriperumbudur-based plant produces 5,400 units per year and employs about 400 people. In addition, the auto maker has a spare parts warehouse unit in Mumbai.

The company has a global sales network in 140 countries employing over 96,000 people across its 24 production facilities in 13 countries.
