Pakistan had little difficulty in registering a five-wicket victory against a depleted West Indies.
Pakistan reached the required target of 134 runs with 117 balls still remaining. Earlier, Windies had won the toss and elected to bat first in the Group A clash at Johannesburg. Pakistan wrapped up their innings for a paltry 133.
Pakistan also started their chase on a bad note as Gavin Tonge got the better of Imran Nazir’s middle stump to strike an early blow.
Kamran Akmal then nicked a Tonge delivery straight to ‘keeper Chadwick Walton.
Shoaib Mallik became Tonge’s third victim as he edged the ball to Walton, who made no mistake.
Mohammad Yousuf also did a Mallik and Tonge claimed his fourth victim.
Misbah-ul Haq then edged a David Bernard delivery to Walton to become fifth Pakistan wicket to fall.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Mohammad Aamer dealt the first blow in the very first over by catching Windies opener Dale Richards off his own bowling.
Rana Naved-ul-Hasan then accounted for Andre Fletcher, with Imran Nazir making no mistake in taking the catch at backward point.
Aamer struck again in the following over to send Travis Dowlin packing without even letting him open his account.
Umar Gul was the next one to strike. Devon Smith was caught by Umar Akmal at second slip of his bowling.
Aamer then claimed his third victim in David Bernard as Windies lost their five wickets before even reaching the 50-run mark.
Gul claimed WI skipper Floyd Reifer and Chadwick Walton’s wickets in the same over but missed his hat-trick chance.
Saeed Ajmal accounted for the eighth wicket as he knocked off Darren Sammy’s off-stump.
Ajmal also claimed the penultimate wicket in Tino Best as wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal proved to be safe hands.
Pak skipper Shahid Afridi wrapped up the WI batting by sending off Nikita Miller, with Shoaib Mallik taking the catch.
