Virender Sehwag smashed a brisk half-century to propel India to 95 for no loss at stumps on Day 3 after Sri Lanka amassed 642 for four declared in their first innings.

Kumar Sangakkara scored a classy 219 and Mahela Jayawardene struck 174 as Sri Lanka declared its first innings at 642-4 on day two of the second Test against India on Tuesday.

Jayawardene hit 20 boundaries and a six for his 28th Test century before being caught by Suresh Raina off Harbhajan Singh.

Declaration followed soon after Jayawardene’s dismissal.

Jayawardene’s century was his 10th at the Sinhalese Sports Club and he surpassed Don Bradman’s nine centuries at Melbourne Cricket Ground to become the highest century-maker at a single ground, though the Sri Lankan has played 12 matches more at the venue than the Australian all-time great.

Sehwag returned bowling figures 1-71 while fellow spinner Pragyan Ojha and seamer Ishant Sharma also picked up a wicket each.

Opener Tharanga Paranavitana helped set up Sri Lanka’s impressive total by making 100 on the first day.
