Shakib Al Hasan played a captain’s innings to lead Bangladesh to a three-wicket win over West Indies in the second ODI.
Shakib took one for 42 in 10 overs as Travis Dowlin’s maiden ODI century led West Indies to a competitive 274 for six to give Bangladesh them an unassailable 2-0 lead.
He then stroked 65 from 62 balls as Bangladesh knocked off the runs with an over to spare.
After suffering a 52-run loss in the first match of the three-game series in Roseau, Dominica, the hosts showed positive intent by choosing to bat and Dowlin made that decision look a good one with 100 off 117 balls.
West Indies got contributions all the way down the order, with Andre Fletcher contributing 22 before being removed by slow left-armer Shakib Al Hasan’s first ball in just the sixth over of the innings.
His opening partner Dale Richards (20) was run out, before Devon Smith (44) dominated a stand of 66 with Dowlin.
It was another decent effort from Richards, who hit just one four and a pulled six off Mahmudullah in following up his 65 from the first match at the same venue - his home ground.
Captain Floyd Reifer perished cheaply, but David Bernard and Rawl Lewis added 22 apiece in support of Dowlin.
Dowlin brought up his century with a single in the final over, leaving Darren Sammy (24 not out of 11 balls) to smash a couple of boundaries off Syed Rasel and keep West Indies in a strong position.
Bangladesh made a slow start to their response and just as Junaid Siddique (23) appeared to be getting into his stride he was removed by Bernard, who then produced a stunning catch to account for Tamim Iqbal (29).
Mohammad Ashraful (64) then shared in stands of 52 with Raqibul Hasan (20) and 74 with Shakib to give Bangladesh the upper hand.
West Indies hit further trouble when Kemar Roach had to be removed from the attack following two no-ball beamers, one of which was hit for six by Shakib, and was replaced in the attack by wicketkeeper Devon Thomas.
When Shakib fell to Sammy, Mushfiqur Rahim (31 from 30) took over, marshalling a stuttering tail.
But Thomas, who does not possess a first-class bowling average, became an unlikely source of hope, taking two wickets including that of Mushfiqur.
It was not enough, however, as Bangladesh stumbled over the line to complete a rare series win.
