One of the most magnificent hill stations in South India, Coonoor is characterized by deep ravines, beautiful valleys and imposing waterfalls. Apart from this, it also boasts of exquisite range of birds, which adds a natural glory to this beautiful town. There are a number of sightseeing options within the city for tourists, on a visit to Coonoor. Apart from this, visitors can go on a tour to Ooty a famous hill station, located about 19 km northwest of Coonoor.
Major Tourist Attractions in Coonoor
This botanical garden which covers an area of 12 hectares of land is one of the main tourist attractions Coonoor. The park got its name after J.D Sim the former Secretary of the Madras Club. The park is partly developed in the Japanese style with the collection of wide range of plant species. The famous among them are the pines, tree ferns, camellia etc.
The Pasteur institute is another important attraction at Coonoor. It is situated near to the Sim’s Park. The Pasteur institute specializes in the research for vaccines for rabies and polio. The institute is open for the visitors only on Saturdays. However, if you want to visit it on other days, you will have to seek prior permission of the Director of the Pasteur institute.
The Pomological station is a research center of the State Agricultural Department for persimmon, pomegranates and apricot. It is one of the three experimental fruit gardens in the Nilgiri Hills. The other two research centers are Burliar and Kallar. A research center of repute, the Pomological Station carries research on different fruits, which are locally grown. Some of the prominent fruits of the area are apples, peaches, plums, persimmons, apricots, lemons and pomegranates.
Lamb’s Rock is an ideal spot for the picnickers. The place derived its name from Captain Lamb who actually carved out out the path. The Hulical ravine is located on the right hand. On e get get a spectacular view of the graceful Coonoor stream flowing 5000 feet below. The rugged cliff offers mouth dropping views of the Coimbatore plains.
Dolphin’s Nose located near Tiger Hills offers breathtaking views of the serene Nilgiri Hills, lovely ravines and the cascading Catherine Falls. Just 10 kms from the fascinating hill station, the dolphin shaped rock is visited by a large number of tourists.
At a distance of 13 km from Coonoor, Droog takes one into the past, with the ruins of a fort, which was once used by Tipu Sultan in the 16th century.
The picturesque Laws Falls are located just 7 km from Coonoor on the Coonoor-Mettupalayam Road. The place acts as a popular picnic spot for tourists coming to the place. The sight of water cascading from a height of 180 feet and the surrounding natural beauty spellbinds the Coonoor Hotels.

By Air : The nearest airport to Coonoor is at Coimbotore. It is located 71 km from Coonoor.
By Rail : The toy-train connects the town to the other nearby towns. It is connected to Ooty (19 Km) and Mettupalayam (28 Km) by the toy-train.
By Bus : .Coonoor is well connected to the other town and cities by excellent roadways
