Vaginal discharge, if is in normal quantity should be worried about as all healthy females will discharge a fluid from the vaginal in small amounts. It is a routine functioning of a female body. When the vagina discharges the fluid in small quantity, the vagina stays moist. The discharge helps in cleaning the vagina of bacteria and dead cells. In fact, if there is no vaginal discharge at all, it will give rise to problems like vaginal dryness, itching, burning etc in the vagina. Therefore, a small amount of vaginal discharge is in fact essential for the normal body functioning. It also acts as a natural lubricant. It helps in the intercourse. It protects the vagina from infection.
The glands in the cervix release a fluid. The fluid is acidic in nature. When the body digests the food, the glucose is broken into various components. One of them is lactic acid, which is made from good bacteria. The quantity of the vaginal discharge differs from woman to woman. It is purely based on the hormonal changes in the body. The vaginal discharge is slightest at the end of the menstrual cycle. As the month progresses, the quantity of discharge also increases. It increases when a woman is aroused. The glands near the mouth of the vagina releases mucus, thus increasing the amount of vaginal discharge. The discharge may also tend to increase during pregnancy.
In case you are suffering from heavy discharge or the vaginal discharge has a peculiar odor, do not shy away from consulting your doctor. You need to tell your doctor about it just like any other disease. If you experience pain in the stomach during intercourse, the vaginal discharge is thick and gives foul smell, then, consult your doctor. If these symptoms are combined with an occasional trace of blood then it is more likely that you are having an infection.
Excessive vaginal discharge may be the result of swelling in the vagina. The medical term for it is vaginitis. It occurs as a result of an infection or if your body does not accept certain chemicals. This type of problem is found mainly in young girls, due to insertion of foreign object into the vagina. When the discharge is like lumps and you feel itching, then it is known as yeast infection. Unsafe sex changes the vaginal discharge into greenish yellow, combined with very bad odor. This is the protozoan infection, or the trichomoniasis. You need to be alert and contact your doctor immediately, if the vagina watery releases blood-tinged discharge. This could be because of cancer of cervix, uterus or vagina.
One can also try home remedies for a couple of days. But if the problem still persists then consult a doctor. Usually, a pelvic examination is conducted and a sample of the discharge is checked with the help of a microscope. After the problem is identified, the doctor may suggest antibiotic creams or oral antibiotics depending upon the type of your infection. A biopsy may be suggested if the doctor if there are symptoms of cancer.
